Short answer: a laptop can charge through USB-C only if its particular USB-C port accepts power input. The charger or power bank must support the laptop's charging method and supply enough power from the port you use, and the cable must be rated for that power. The connector shape alone proves none of these things.
Start with the laptop's exact model number and its official specifications. This five-minute check can save you from buying a phone charger that fits the socket but cannot keep the laptop running.

How to find out whether your laptop accepts USB-C power
- Find the full model number on the underside, in system settings or on the original box. A family name such as “Inspiron 15” is too broad.
- Open that model's official manual and search for USB-C charging, Power Delivery input or AC adapter. If there are two USB-C sockets, check which one accepts power.
- Read the wattage on the original charger. If the manual requires a proprietary barrel connector or explicitly excludes USB-C charging, do not assume an adapter will change that.
- If the specification is unclear, ask the laptop maker or send the exact model and a photo of the adapter label to our support team before ordering.
USB Power Delivery is a negotiated charging standard: compatible equipment agrees on a supported power level. USB-IF describes the standard and its newer extended-power range. A USB-C plug by itself does not mean the laptop implements PD input.
Will a 20W phone charger work on a 65W laptop?
Usually it is the wrong purchase. If the laptop accepts the charger at all, it may show “charging slowly,” gain charge only while asleep, or continue to lose battery during use. Microsoft lists an underpowered charger, the wrong charging port and an inadequate cable among the causes of slow charging or discharging while plugged in.
A 65W-rated laptop is a useful example, not a universal rule. A compatible 65W USB-C PD charger may be appropriate when one device is connected to the correct port. A charger labeled 100W total could deliver less than 65W to that port after a phone is added. Read the port-by-port output chart before choosing a multi-port model.
Can a power bank charge a laptop?
Yes, when the laptop supports USB-C input and the bank provides adequate single-port USB-C output. Capacity and output answer different questions: mAh or Wh tells you how much energy the bank stores; watts tells you how quickly it can supply power. A 20,000mAh bank limited to phone-level output is not automatically a laptop power bank.
Compare the required watts first, then capacity, cable, weight and recharge time. If the laptop plugs in but does not charge
- Confirm that you used the laptop's power-input USB-C port. Another identical-looking port may serve data only.
- Disconnect other devices from a multi-port charger and retry with the laptop alone.
- Check the cable rating and try a known-good cable suitable for the required power. Read our USB-C cable guide if the cable's wattage, data and video labels are confusing.
- Test with the manufacturer's original charger. If it also fails, a new third-party charger is unlikely to solve the underlying laptop fault.
- Try charging while the laptop is asleep or off. If that works but the battery falls during use, your setup may be supplying less power than the laptop consumes.
Do not continue using a damaged, unusually hot or loose connector. Ask the laptop maker for model-specific advice if its manual specifies a proprietary charging arrangement.
