Short answer: if a USB-C to HDMI adapter shows no picture, first check whether that exact USB-C port can send video. Many USB-C ports support charging or data but no display output. If the port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) or a compatible Thunderbolt video mode, check the TV input, cable, display settings and adapter in that order.
Do these checks before buying another dongle. A second ordinary HDMI adapter will not add video output to a laptop port that lacks it.

1. Check the laptop port, not just the connector
Look up the full laptop model on the manufacturer's support site. Find the USB-C port description and look for DisplayPort Alt Mode, video output or Thunderbolt support. Dell's display guidance says an ordinary USB-C to HDMI adapter needs a laptop USB-C port with DP Alt Mode or compatible Thunderbolt video; a power-only or data-only port will not send a picture. A small symbol beside the socket can help, but the manual is more reliable when a laptop has several similar ports.
If the port lacks video, use a built-in HDMI or DisplayPort output if available. A separate USB graphics solution may be possible on some computers, but it is a different product category with driver and performance trade-offs.
2. Prove the TV or monitor input works
- Turn on the display and select the exact HDMI input where the cable is plugged in.
- Reseat both ends and, if possible, test that HDMI cable and input with another known-working source.
- Try the laptop's built-in HDMI output, if it has one. This separates a general display problem from a USB-C adapter problem.
3. Tell Windows to use the external display
Press Windows + P and choose Duplicate or Extend. In Windows display settings, try Detect if the screen is still missing. Microsoft recommends checking the cable, trying another cable or display, and disconnecting docks and accessories while isolating a monitor issue. Restart the laptop after changing the physical connection if detection still fails.
4. Test one component at a time
Connect one monitor directly through the adapter. Remove any extra hub, splitter or extension cable. Then swap just one part: the HDMI cable, the display input or the adapter. If a different cable works, you have found a cable issue. If the adapter fails on another computer that supports USB-C video, the adapter is suspect. Keep the working setup as the control while testing.
5. If 4K fails, reduce the display mode
Start at 1080p and a common refresh rate, then increase the setting. “4K” on an adapter label is incomplete without a refresh-rate figure, and the laptop output, adapter, cable and screen must all support the final mode. A product page's 4K@60Hz claim does not override the laptop's own limit.
6. Know what an HDMI splitter can do
A basic HDMI splitter sends the same source picture to more than one display. It does not create two independent extended desktops. Microsoft explicitly distinguishes duplication from extending multiple monitors. Check your laptop and dock specifications before buying a multi-display hub.
